The Product Still Matters

There is another part of this story that shouldn't get lost in all the talk about creating an experience.

The bottle mattered.

When the staff first saw the display, there was an immediate reaction to the bottles themselves.

These weren't the typical promotional water bottles many of us have received over the years. They were beautiful, substantial, name-brand Owala bottles customized specifically for LOG Surgery Center.

And people knew exactly what they were.

There were immediate reactions along the lines of:

“Wait...these are Owalas?”

“These are really nice!”

“We get to keep these?”

Before anyone had chosen a piece of candy or picked out their first sticker, the quality of the gift had already communicated something.

Someone invested in us.

That mattered to me.

After 21 years of receiving promotional products myself, I knew I didn't want to choose something simply because our logo could be printed on it. I wanted to give my team something I would be genuinely excited to receive—something recognizable, useful and good enough that they would continue carrying it long after National ASC Month was over.

The clean white bottle with our LOG Surgery Center logo was beautiful on its own. And because we intentionally kept the design simple, it became the perfect canvas for what came next.

A Great Product Became Personal

That's where the Bottle Bar changed the experience.

Everyone started with the same high-quality branded Owala.

Then we gave them hundreds of stickers and said:

Make it yours.

And they did.

By the end of the event, no two bottles looked quite the same.

The LOGSC logo connected everyone to the Center. The stickers told you something about the person carrying it.

A nurse could make hers look completely different from a surgical technologist's. Someone who wanted five carefully placed stickers could do that. Someone who apparently believed every available inch of an Owala required decoration could do that too.

And watching everyone compare what they had created became part of the fun.

That combination turned out to be important:

Start with a promotional product people genuinely want. Then give them an experience that creates an emotional connection to it.

The Product Brought Them In. The Experience Made Them Stay.

Throughout the week, something interesting happened.

Staff continued filtering into my office.

Sometimes they came because they wanted to look through the stickers again.

Sometimes they wanted another piece of candy.

Sometimes they wanted to show someone what they had added to their bottle.

And sometimes they seemed to come in simply because everyone else was hanging out in there.

The Bottle Bar became a gathering place.

I had staff tell me it was the best employee gift or employee appreciation experience they had ever received at a job.

That's an extraordinary reaction to something that started with an order for branded drinkware.

But I think that's also the lesson.

The quality of the Owala told them:

You're worth giving something good to.

The personalization told them:

This belongs to you.

The Bottle Bar told them:

Someone thought about how you would feel when you received it.

And the time we spent together afterward created something no logo could ever be printed on:

a memory.

That's the Opportunity for Promotional Products

For companies investing in employee gifts, customer appreciation or branded merchandise, perhaps the question shouldn't only be:

“What should we give them?”

Maybe there's a second question:

“How are we going to give it to them?”

Because choosing the right product still matters tremendously.

A recognizable, high-quality product creates excitement before the experience even begins. It tells the recipient that this wasn't simply the least expensive item someone could find to put a company logo on.

But thoughtful presentation can take that investment much further.

In our case, we didn't just distribute branded Owala bottles.

We built an experience around them.

And that's why, a week later, people were still walking into my office carrying their bottles, searching for another sticker, grabbing another piece of candy and spending time together.

The promotional product didn't disappear into the experience.

It became the centerpiece of it.

And the experience gave the product something promotional merchandise doesn't automatically come with:

a story.
